The farewell tour© 2018 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / VG Bild-Kunst, BonnView full imageKurt Schwitters We own many Schwitters collages and other works by him, but a lot of people come here just to see this particular work. This was a piece he was able to get out of Germany when he left for Scandinavia. A lot of people bailed out as fast as they could after Hitler came to power. We’re not exactly sure, but it was made sometime between 1920 and 1939—when Schwitters left Germany. This piece was shown at the Museum of Modern Art. And if you know the important early work of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, well, this is what they were looking at in the ’50s, when it was shown at MoMA.
