Yale Opera stages Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin

In February, Yale Opera will stage Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at New Haven’s historic Shubert Theatre. Paul Curran, who has led productions at such celebrated houses as the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Santa Fe Opera, Dallas Opera, Norwegian National Opera, and Los Angeles Opera, directs Yale Opera’s new production, which will feature, alongside the cast, the Yale Philharmonia. Ellington Jazz Series welcomes compelling artists

The 2018–19 Ellington Jazz Series kicked off with a performance by Grammy Award–winning trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, who in 2013 received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his immeasurable contributions to our culture. The season continues in January with an appearance by legendary guitarist Pat Martino and comes to a close in March with a concert featuring pianist and composer Renee Rosnes, who will perform music from her two most recent albums, Written in the Rocks and Beloved of the Sky.

YSM honors cellist for distinguished service

Convocation 2018, which took place on September 6, included a performance by New York Philharmonic principal cellist Carter Brey ’79Mus, who studied with Aldo Parisot at the School of Music. Brey was also given the school’s Ian Mininberg Distinguished Service Award. School of Music dean Robert Blocker said that, as an artist, Brey has “a humanity that is uncommon.” He further offered, “You have honored us, Carter, with your life and your music. And we thank you.”
