Alumni earn prestigious awards

Composer Andrew Norman ’09MusAD was named a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his orchestral work Sustain, which the Pulitzer judges described as “an absorbing orchestral work rich with mesmerizing textures and color.”

Composers Suzanne Farrin ’00MusM, 08DMA, and Samuel Adams 10MusM received Guggenheim Fellowships “on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise,” according to a press release issued by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Pianist Henry Kramer ’13MusAD, ’19DMA, was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant. The $25,000 award is designed “to give outstanding instrumentalists significant recognition on which to continue to build their careers,” according to the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which administers the Avery Fisher Artist Program.

Trumpeter joins faculty

Trumpeter Kevin Cobb was appointed to the School of Music faculty. Cobb is a member of the American Brass Quintet and has worked with the New York Philharmonic, American Composer’s Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York New Music Ensemble, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. Cobb earned his bachelor of music and master of music degrees from the Curtis Institute and the Juilliard School, respectively. He succeeds Allan Dean, who retired in May after 30 years on the school’s faculty.

Collection welcomes new curator

Dr. Christina Linsenmeyer was appointed associate curator at the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments. Linsenmeyer previously worked as a researcher at the Sibelius Academy at the University of the Arts Helsinki. She was a founding curator and served as interim head of curatorial affairs at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. Linsenmeyer earned a doctorate in musicology from Washington University, a diploma in violin-making from the North Bennet Street School in Boston, and a bachelor of arts degree with honors in music from Colgate University.

The collection will be closed through August for exterior restoration work.
