New faculty, alumni honors

The School of Music this past winter announced the appointments of three new faculty members, including one alum. Composer Katherine Balch ’16MusM will join the school’s faculty as visiting assistant professor adjunct of composition; violinist Soovin Kim will join the school’s faculty as visiting professor in the practice of violin; and music theorist Stephanie Venturino will join the school’s faculty as assistant professor adjunct of music analysis and musicianship.

Composer and School of Music alum Christopher Theofanidis ’97DMA was elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the organization announced in March. Theofanidis serves as professor in the practice of composition and coordinator of composition studies at the School of Music, where he has been a member of the faculty since 2008.

Composers Katherine Balch and Michael Gilbertson ’13MusM, ’21DMA, each received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the organization announced in February. Balch received a $10,000 Wladimir and Rhoda Lakond Award in Music, and Gilbertson received a $15,000 Goddard Lieberson Fellowship in Music, an award that was also received by Yale College alum Eric Nathan ’06.
