Grammy awards
Several School of Music alumni won Grammy Awards as members of the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, which earned the coveted prize in the “Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance” category for its recording Rough Magic. Members of the ensemble include bass-baritone Dashon Burton ’11MusM, mezzo-soprano Virginia Warnken Kelsey ’13MusM, composer and vocalist Caroline Shaw ’07MusM, and the group’s founder and co–artistic director Brad Wells ’98MusM, ’05DMA.
Cellist Felix Umansky ’12MusAD won a Grammy Award as a member of the Harlem Quartet. The ensemble earned that award in the “Best Classical Compendium” category for its recording Passion of Bach and Coltrane.
A more equitable music ecosystem
Bassoonist, media producer, and arts administrator Loki Karuna (Garrett McQueen, formerly) visited the school to present a talk titled “Music, Activism, and Classical Decolonization,” which highlighted his efforts to reimagine and create a more equitable music ecosystem in the United States. The event was hosted by the school’s Office of Equity, Belonging, and Student Life.
