Alumna wins painting prize

Anna Betbeze ’06MFA, a senior faculty critic at the School of Art, has been selected to receive the 2017 Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting, administered by the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation. The prize includes a $15,000 unrestricted cash award and a solo exhibition at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, in 1980, Betbeze uses Greek Flokati rugs, fire, bleach, and industrial dyes to create large-scale abstract paintings that reference feminism and art history. She is a 2002 alumna of Yale’s Norfolk Summer School of Art, and graduated from the Yale School of Art in 2006 with a degree in painting/printmaking. Her work has been shown in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Berlin, among other places. She won the Metropolitan Museum of Art Rome Prize in 2013–14. 

New York exhibition includes work by faculty member

A video by Neil Goldberg, critic in graphic design at the School of Art, is part of a permanent exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York, New York at its Core: 400 Years of NYC History, which examines the life of the city from its creation to today. Goldberg interviewed people on the street and created the video that he says “reflects on change, mortality, nostalgia, complaint, hope, and fear,” and “speaks to how New Yorkers understand our own lives within the larger life of the city.”
