Dean Storr appointed to second five-year term

Yale president Richard Levin ’74PhD has reappointed Robert Storr as dean of the School of Art. His second five-year term begins July 1.

Storr became dean of the school in 2006. Prior to Yale, he was the Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts. Before that he held teachings positions at the CUNY Graduate Center, the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies, and Tyler School of Art, as well as the New York Studio School and Harvard University. Appointed a curator of painting and sculpture at MoMA in 1990, he stepped down as senior curator in that department in 2002. An accomplished painter whose work has been shown in commercial galleries and is in several museum collections, he is a widely published scholar and critic. In 2007, Storr was the first American-born curator to serve as artistic director of the Venice Biennale. In that same year New Yorkmagazine named Storr among the most influential leaders in the art world.

In announcing the reappointment, President Levin noted Dean Storr’s "refreshing and exciting vision for the school" and credited the dean with "opening the school to new sources of artistic influence, both domestically and internationally." Among Storr’s many innovations during his first term as dean is the gallery he established in the school’s new building on Edgewood Avenue. The gallery is devoted to bringing examples of contemporary art from around the world to New Haven.
