Renowned artist at Edgewood gallery

An exhibition of the work of Alex Katz (b. 1927) opens January 14 in the 32 Edgewood Gallery and provides a comprehensive overview of the artist’s prolific career that has spanned more than six decades. Katz, 85, is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker who is among the most ubiquitous Americans in the international art world today. His iconic large-scale portraits are instantly recognizable, and his works reside in more than 100 public collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the French National Collection, and England’s Tate Gallery. Katz X Katz includes early works from his time at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the late 1940s, as well as recent oil sketches, drawings, cut-outs, etchings, and mural-scale canvases. Some of the pieces have never been exhibited before, and all works have been taken directly from the artist’s personal collection. Katz X Katz will be on view through March 10.

Art auction benefits Sandy victims

Students and faculty of the School of Art organized a silent auction of original art work in December to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. Some 50 pieces were on view during the auction, which was held December 5 at the Green Gallery and open to the public. Computer monitors allowed auction winners to donate the proceeds of their sale to preselected charities. All of the art that was auctioned was created and donated by students and faculty.
