New Presidential Senior Fellow to deepen connections to liberal arts
Author and columnist David Brooks began a five-year appointment as a Presidential Senior Fellow at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs on February 1. Part of Yale’s new Presidential Senior Fellowship program, the appointment brings Brooks to campus to foster respectful debate, bridge the academy and society, and expand public access to university scholarship. During the spring semester, Brooks will host lectures and conversations at Yale Jackson and develop public-facing programming, including a new weekly video podcast produced by The Atlantic. A former Jackson senior fellow, Brooks has long engaged Yale students in discussions of character, humility, and civic life.
Professor examines why churches defend liberal democracy
Kate Baldwin, associate professor of political science and global affairs at Yale Jackson, explores why Christian churches in sub-Saharan Africa have become leading advocates for liberal democratic institutions in her new book, Faith in Democracy. Drawing on evidence from more than 30 countries, Baldwin shows how democratic systems can protect churches’ core activities—particularly education—from autocratic interference. She expands on these themes in a recent blog post for Cambridge University Press and in a conversation on The Democracy Paradox podcast.
Scholar advances global human rights work through UN mandate
In his role as UN independent expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, Graeme Reid, a research scholar at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, presented two major thematic reports to the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly in 2025, addressing forced displacement and barriers to education. His work also included high-level engagement with governments across regions and an official country visit to Colombia, with a visit to Mongolia planned for May 2026.
