Newest matriculating class
This August, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences welcomed its latest matriculating students. This year’s class of 690 students earned their undergraduate degrees at 322 different colleges and universities and hail from 52 countries around the world. In addition to 330 students from the United States, 180 students come from China, 37 from India, 17 from Canada, 12 from South Korea, and 13 from the United Kingdom. Most of the students (500) are enrolled in doctoral programs; the remaining 190 are pursuing master’s degrees.
Dean Cooley reappointed
Lynn Cooley has been appointed to a second term as dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Her second five-year term began July 1.
Announcing the reappointment in May, President Peter Salovey praised Cooley’s leadership. Calling her “a tireless advocate for graduate students,” Salovey noted the significance of her guidance while “convening a range of important conversations about graduate education in the twenty-first century.”
During her first term, Cooley initiated annual graduate program reviews, which focus on student recruitment, progress, and employment outcomes. Cooley also enhanced the structure of advising processes for faculty and graduate students, expanded efforts to attract students who bring diversity and excellence to Yale, and increased the level of financial support for PhD students and their families.
Cooley is the C. N. H. Long Professor of Genetics and professor of cell biology and molecular, cellular & developmental biology. A leader on campus and beyond, she has served on the boards of the Genetics Society of America and Connecticut College. She is also a member of the Connecticut Academy for Science and Engineering and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
