Program prepares underserved students for graduate school
Recent college graduates can explore research careers and gain the skills to successfully apply to graduate school through the Emerging Scholars Initiative Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (ESI PREP). Participants experience life as graduate students at Yale, taking courses, conducting research, and receiving guidance alongside first-year PhD students.
The Yale ESI PREP is unique in higher education. Unlike those offered at peer institutions, the Yale program welcomes the most promising and diverse college graduates from across the nation with interests across the humanities, social sciences, engineering, applied sciences, and biological and biomedical sciences. An independent development plan is created for each participant that includes elements for collaborative and independent learning and research development. In addition to having a faculty mentor, students have an advanced graduate student mentor who works with them throughout their time at Yale. Dean Michelle Nearon, director of the Office for Graduate Student Development and Diversity and head of the program, said, “Leveraging the benefits of near-peer mentoring, such as persistence, interest, and belonging, to complement students’ interactions with their faculty mentors is the key to participants’ success.”
The ESI PREP students for 2021–22 are: Andrea Argueta, philosophy; Dana Harris, management; Christopher Jenkins, Near Eastern languages & civilizations; Vanessa Llamas, psychology; Niles Marthone, history of art and classics; Marisa Norzagaray, linguistics; and Brianna Sarcos, psychology.
