Record number of applications received for entering class

The Divinity School received a record number of applications for next fall’s entering class. Dean Greg Sterling attributed the 18 percent increase in applications to the school’s growing reputation and advances in financial aid, as well as renewed interest in theological education and religious/spiritual formation. YDS received a total of 673 applications for its three degree programs: 264 for the master of divinity (MDiv), 374 for the master of arts in religion (MAR), and 35 for the master of sacred theology (STM). The school will welcome approximately 115 new students in August.

New icon honors former professor in chapel that bears his name

YDS has installed a newly commissioned altarpiece in the Henri Nouwen Chapel in the Divinity Library. Created by famed Greek artist George Kordis, the artwork is an icon depicting the return of the prodigal son, the biblical parable that was the subject of one of Nouwen’s best known books. Nouwen was a Jesuit priest and renowned spirituality author who taught pastoral theology at the Divinity School from 1971 to 1981. A full story with images of the icon is available on the Divinity School website.

Architecture students design water sculpture for YDS Living Village

A sculpture of massive granite blocks and flowing water will be a centerpiece of Yale Divinity School’s Living Village, scheduled to open in August. Titled Confluence, the water sculpture is the creation of three School of Architecture students—Ellen Zhu, Julia Edwards, and Cole Quist—whose design was chosen from among 16 submissions in a competition held last September. Sustainable water stewardship is a key component of the Living Village, which is the largest living-building residence hall at any university. Visit the YDS website for a full article with a rendering of the sculpture.
