Acclaimed poet-theologian joining faculty
Irish poet, author, and theologian Pádraig Ó Tuama, known by many for his popular Poetry Unbound podcast and his numerous appearances on the On Being program hosted by Krista Tippett ’94MDiv, is joining the YDS faculty as professor in the practice of spirituality. Ó Tuama has worked at the intersection of peacebuilding, theology, and spirituality for many years. He led the Irish peace group Corrymeela from 2014 to 2019, during which time he published one of his best-known books, Daily Prayer with the Corrymeela Community. In his announcement to the Divinity School community in late December, Dean Greg Sterling hailed Ó Tuama for the depth and reach of his work. “His case for a faculty appointment,” Sterling said, “is the only one I have ever brought that included letters not only from a Pulitzer Prize–winning poet (Jericho Brown) but from a rock star (The Edge from U2).” Sterling’s full announcement can be found in the news section of the YDS website.
YDS journal devotes latest issue to “hope for a living planet”
To mark the opening of the Divinity School’s regenerative residence hall, Carol B. Bauer Hall at the Living Village, YDS devoted the fall issue of its Reflections journal to ecotheology and “building hope for a living planet.” In the issue, 19 Yale-connected theologians, ministers, and other practitioners declare the work of ecotheology and environmental care alive and well, and poised to define the future. As Reflections editor Ray Waddle wrote in his note to readers, “Despite the discouraging ecological trends that mark the times, good news is stirring to disrupt the bad. . . . As the Living Village and these Reflections writers manifest, the power of faith and conviction to reverse environmental destruction is the real sign of the times.”
