Professor receives human rights award

Sterling Professor of International Law Harold Hongju Koh received the Louis B. Sohn Human Rights Award from the UN Association of the National Capital Area on December 9, 2022. Koh is one of the country’s leading experts in public and private international law, national security law, and human rights. He began teaching at Yale Law School in 1985 and served as its 15th dean from 2004 until 2009. Koh has also served four US presidents in various governmental roles. Including the Sohn Award, Koh has received more than 30 awards for his human rights work.

New faculty join Yale Law School

Natasha Sarin ’11 and Ketan Ramakrishnan ’21JD joined the Yale Law School faculty as associate professors of law on January 1. Sarin’s teaching and research center on public finance and financial regulation. She earned a JD and PhD in economics from Harvard University and a BA in ethics, politics, and economics from Yale. Ramakrishnan received a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Oxford. His teaching and research interests include torts, contracts, property, the ethics and governance of emerging technological risk, and foundational issues in moral and legal philosophy.

Professor elected to American Law Institute

Professor Aslι Ü. Bâli ’99JD has been elected to the American Law Institute (ALI). The new class includes 31 members who will bring their expertise to ALI’s work to clarify, modernize, and improve the law. Bâli’s teaching and research interests include public international law and comparative constitutional law, with a focus on the Middle East. She has written on the nuclear nonproliferation regime, humanitarian intervention, the roles of race and empire in the interpretation and enforcement of international law, the role of judicial independence in constitutional transitions, federalism and decentralization in the Middle East, and constitutional design in religiously divided societies. Bâli joined the Law School faculty in July 2022.
