Finance professor honored with Italian medal

Professor of Finance Stefano Giglio has been awarded the Carlo Alberto Medal for the year 2021 by the Collegio Carlo Alberto in Turin, Italy. The award recognizes an Italian scholar younger than 40 who has made outstanding contributions to the field of economics.

The award announcement noted Giglio’s research at the intersection of finance and economics—research that spans asset pricing, macroeconomics, and real estate, with a focus on hedging macroeconomic risks using different financial instruments. An award ceremony will be held at the Collegio Carlo Alberto in late spring.

Public education leaders convene at Yale SOM

Fifteen senior public education leaders from around the US convened at Evans Hall in October for a week of lectures, discussions, and networking as part of the Broad Center at Yale SOM’s Fellowship for Public Education Leadership.

The leaders were part of the fellowship’s inaugural cohort. The weeklong module was the second of four that the fellows will complete during the ten-month program. The Broad Fellowship is a tuition-free executive leadership program for senior-level public education leaders from across the country.

WHO cites Yale SOM research on pandemic mask use

A new publication from the World Health Organization cites a groundbreaking study coauthored by Professors Jason Abaluck and A. Mushfiq Mobarak regarding updated recommendations for mask use in community settings.

The study, published in Science and titled “The Impact of Community Masking on COVID-19: A Cluster-Randomized Trial in Bangladesh,” was the first large-scale randomized trial to demonstrate the effectiveness of masks in preventing COVID-19 in a community setting. A collaboration with the research and policy group Innovations for Poverty Action, the study was coauthored by scholars from Stanford University, the University of California–Berkeley, and other universities.
