New study will examine long-term impact on COVID-19 survivors

While much has been learned about the coronavirus, the long-term health effects on its survivors may take years to understand. To look for answers, Yale School of Medicine, together with eight institutions, recently launched a nationwide clinical trial called INSPIRE (Innovative Support for Patients with SARS COV-2 Infections Registry). The study will follow 4,800 participants ages 18 and older for a year and a half after they enroll in the trial. Among other outcomes, researchers will track how many patients develop myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

Two researchers named AAAS fellows

John H. Krystal ’84MD, Robert L. McNeil Jr. Professor of Translational Research, and Sally Shaywitz, Audrey G. Ratner Professor of Pediatrics, have been inducted as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), for their distinguished contributions to science. 

Krystal, chair of the Yale Department of Psychiatry, was honored for his research on glutamate signaling and the use of ketamine as a novel, fast-acting antidepressant. Shaywitz, codirector of the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity, was recognized for her contributions to the public’s understanding of the biological basis and natural history of dyslexia. In her book, Overcoming Dyslexia, Shaywitz provides practical approaches and interventions for dyslexia.
