Yale professor to direct federal program on women’s health

President Biden has announced the launch of the first-ever White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, an effort to be led by first lady Jill Biden and the White House’s Gender Policy Council, and directed by Carolyn M. Mazure, founder and director of Yale School of Medicine’s Women’s Health Research at Yale. 

This initiative will strive to advance women’s health research and shed light on conditions that are specific to women, disproportionately affect women, or affect women differently. Mazure’s first steps in collaboration with the White House Gender Policy Council include bringing together agencies across the federal government to generate concrete recommendations that will advance women’s health research. They also will be working on priority areas of focus with these agencies and exploring new public-private partnerships with philanthropic leaders.

Three professors elected to clinical investigation society

Three Yale School of Medicine faculty are among 100 new members elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). They are E. Jennifer Edelman ’12MHS, professor of medicine (general medicine); Madhav Menon, associate professor of medicine (nephrology); and F. Perry Wilson, associate professor of medicine (nephrology) and of public health (chronic disease epidemiology). 

Edelman is certified as an internist and an HIV specialist, and in addiction medicine. Her research focuses on addressing substance use among individuals with—and at substantial risk for—HIV in clinical and community-based settings. Menon is a transplant nephrologist whose work focuses on mechanisms underlying the development of longer-term injury to transplanted kidneys, which is an important cause of transplant failure and return to dialysis worldwide. Wilson uses patient-level data and advanced analytics to personalize medicine for each individual patient. His research interests focus on the interface of digital health with medical care and extend to clinical-decision support interventions, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence.
