YSM receives top ranking for research
In its 2025 rankings, US News & World Report named Yale School of Medicine one of the best medical schools in the United States for research. The outlet ranks schools in four tiers, and YSM achieved Tier 1 status, which is given to the highest-performing medical schools.
For its rankings, US News & World Report considers the total dollar amount of research grants and contracts, total research funding per faculty member, the amount of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grant funding at the medical school and its affiliated hospitals, and average NIH research grant dollars per faculty member. It also considers median MCAT scores, median undergraduate GPAs, acceptance rate, and faculty/student ratio.
US News & World Report released its “Best Medical Schools” ratings on April 8. YSM also received a Tier 1 rating for “Best Medical Schools: Research,” in last year’s report.
Microbiologist joins medical school faculty
Joseph Mougous, an international leader in microbiology, will soon join the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis at Yale School of Medicine and the Microbial Sciences Institute at West Campus. Mougous, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, is currently a professor of microbiology, director of the Microbial Interactions and Microbiome Center, and Garvey Endowed Chair of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington.
Known for his significant contributions to the field of microbiology, Mougous has discovered how bacteria build “hypodermic needles” to deliver toxins into other bacteria, uncovered unprecedented mechanisms of action for antibacterials, and revealed the biology of mysterious microbes that represent approximately 15 percent of bacterial diversity but have resisted previous experimental efforts. His research has identified novel antimicrobial strategies and produced new tools for gene editing of mammalian cells. For these and other contributions, Mougous was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2022.
