Yale on the Thames

Like a summer camp, Yale's boathouse on the Thames River in Gales Ferry, Connecticut, comes alive only once a year, and for only one reason. Eli crew members come to “the Ferry” for several days every year to prepare for the nation's oldest college sporting event -- the Yale-Harvard men's heavyweight regatta in New London. The compound includes a boathouse (right) and a dormitory (far left) where the crews play board games and ping-pong, as there's no television or Internet access.

This year, Yale's varsity crew (including Lucas Spielfogel ’10, foreground, and captain Andrew Collard ’09, center) lost to Harvard, as did the junior varsity and freshman crews. But win or lose, rowers cherish their memories of the Ferry.
