Ted Esselstyn ’86 is an artisanal furniture maker who prefers discarded urban trees, otherwise bound for the chipper, that “put a little soul” in his works. The Yale Farm is a working organic garden, part of Yale's Sustainable Food Project. Sounds like a match. When Esselstyn learned that two large red elm trees, across Edwards Street from the farm, were diseased and would be cut down, he proposed a project. The result is a pair of picnic tables and six benches, now in near-constant use at the property.
