Gringo: A Coming of Age in Latin America

by Chesa Boudin '03
Scribner, $25

In 1981, the author's Weather Underground parents were arrested for an infamous robbery. Two activists, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, raised the infant; he became a Rhodes Scholar and is now at Yale Law School. To come to terms with radical politics, Boudin traveled through Central and South America, observing firsthand the contradictions between theory and practice.

Jesus Was a Liberal: Reclaiming Christianity for All
by Rev. Scotty McLennan '70
Palgrave Macmillan, $26.95

"The estimated 60 million liberal Christians in America are caught in the crossfire between the secular left and the religious right," says McLennan. He explains what liberal Christians believe about Jesus, as well as same-sex marriage, evolution, and other hot-button issues, and maps the territory between atheism and fundamentalism.

Right Time, Right Place: Coming of Age with William F. Buckley Jr. and the Conservative Movement
by Richard Brookhiser '77
Basic Books, $27.50

In 1969, high school freshman Brookhiser wrote an article criticizing a Vietnam War protest at his school, and sent it off to the National Review. Editor William F. Buckley Jr. '50 published it and eventually hired the young writer. This memoir looks back on Buckley and the movement he helped nurture.

The Bible and the People
by Lori Anne Ferrell '86BLS, '91PhD
Yale University Press, $32.50

"The Bible is not a book but a library of books," writes Ferrell, a historian of early modern Europe. She describes the forms it has taken in the English-speaking world, from illuminated manuscripts crafted in Anglo-Saxon monasteries to dramatic readings by celebrities on YouTube, and traces its route to an ever wider audience despite "the intrinsic strangeness of the text."
