Yale hockey player Mandi Schwartz ’11 (left) died on April 3 after a two-year struggle with leukemia. She was 23 years old. A native of Saskatchewan, Schwartz entered Yale with the Class of 2010 and played in 73 straight games before she was diagnosed in December 2008. Her illness inspired teammates and others in the Yale community to organize a bone marrow registry drive that continues at Yale as an annual event.

Appointed

Susan Gibbons will begin a five-year term as University Librarian in July. Gibbons, who currently runs the River Campus libraries of the University of Rochester, is known for studies she did at Rochester with an anthropologist to better understand how faculty and students use libraries. At Yale she succeeds Frank Turner ’71PhD, who died suddenly in November, just two months after he was appointed to the post. The University Librarian oversees the entire Yale library system, with 13 million volumes, 22 locations, and nearly 600 employees.

Edwin “E. C.” Schroeder became director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library in January. Schroeder joined the library in 1989, and he has served as head of technical services since June 2004. He, too, succeeds Frank Turner, who had been director of the Beinecke before becoming University Librarian.

Two new West Campus research institutes now have leaders: pharmacology chair Joseph Schlessinger has been named director of Yale’s Cancer Biology Institute, and cell biology chairJames Rothman ’71 has been named director of the Biodesign Institute. Schlessinger will lead research into the molecular basis of cancer; Rothman will oversee collaborative investigations into living and synthetic “nano-machines.”

The deans of two Yale arts schools have been appointed to five-year terms. James Bundy ’95MFA will serve a third term as dean of the School of Drama beginning in July 2012, andRobert Storr will begin his second term as dean of the School of Art this July.
