A management student who was injured in an accident at the Yale Bowl last November has filed a lawsuit over the incident. Sarah Short ’13MBA is suing the U-Haul Company of Connecticut and Brendan Ross ’13, the driver of the U-Haul truck that struck her in the parking lot during tailgate parties before the Yale-Harvard football game. Two women were hit and one killed in the accident, which has led to new restrictions on tailgating at the Bowl.

 

Barbara Walters will address the Yale College Class of 2012 at this year’s Class Day ceremonies on May 20. Walters, 82, has spent more than 50 years in journalism. She will be the first female Class Day speaker since 2005.

 

Less than a third of the Yale faculty members who received tenure from 2000 to 2012 were women, according to numbers presented this spring by the Women Faculty Forum. Their data show that 77 percent of tenured positions and 62 percent of junior faculty positions went to men during those years. Female faculty members who spoke to the Yale Daily News attributed the gap to both unconscious bias and women leaving academia before they reach senior positions.

 

Students who want to join a fraternity or sorority will have to wait a little longer under new rules announced by the Yale College Dean’s Office in March. Greek-letter organizations will now be unable to recruit freshmen until the spring semester; administrators say the change is intended to help freshmen make more-educated decisions about joining such groups.

 

Seven new courses are now available online in the Open Yale Courses series, which offers on video—for free—a complete set of lectures delivered in Yale College courses. The new additions range from African American history to organic chemistry. There are now 42 courses available in all.
