Under the Covers: A Visual History of Decorated Endpapers

Endpapers, the sheets that line the inside of a book’s binding and text block, developed out of a need to protect illuminations in medieval books from the hardwood boards that served as covers. This exhibit traces endpapers’ evolution from plain and utilitarian to elaborate and decorative.

The first major exhibition in 30 years devoted to Richard Wilson (1714–82) explores the artist’s status as the “father of British landscape painting” and focuses on his pivotal years in Rome during the 1750s.
