Robert Burt ’64LLB (pictured), a professor at the Law School, died on August 3. He was 76 years old. Burt, the Alexander M. Bickel Professor Emeritus of Law, joined the faculty in 1976. A scholar of constitutional law, he had wide-ranging interests that also included the intersections of law with medicine, religion, and psychoanalysis. In 2004, Burt led a faculty lawsuit aiming to preserve federal funding at the Law School while denying military recruiters access to school events because of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gay and lesbian service members.

Harold W. Scheffler, a professor emeritus of anthropology who taught at Yale from 1963 to 2008, died on July 24 in New Haven. He was 83 years old. A native of St. Louis, Scheffler did his graduate work at the University of Chicago. He was known for his work in documenting patterns of kinship in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and aboriginal Australia.

Stepping down

Yale spokeswoman Elizabeth Stauderman ’83, ’04MSL, left this summer to become vice president for communications at the University of Rochester. Stauderman worked at the Divinity School, the Law School, and the School of Management before becoming deputy chief communications officer in 2010, then chief communications officer and special assistant to the president in 2012.

Appointed

Child psychologist Alan Kazdin has been named a Sterling Professor, the university’s highest faculty honor. Kazdin, a former director of the Yale Child Study Center and a former president of the American Psychological Association, is an authority on behavioral disorders in children and adolescents. His publications include a number of books for parents.
