New housing for graduate student will soon rise on the site of an Elm Street parking lot in the Broadway area, next to Tyco. In July, the City of New Haven approved Yale’s plan to build a six-story building with retail space and 41 two-bedroom apartments. The new units will help fill the gap left when dormitory space for 168 students is eliminated from the Hall of Graduate Studies.

A task force on gender equity at the School of Medicine released its report in July, including recommendations for dealing with salary inequities and leadership opportunities for women in the school. The report calls for the school to hire a chief diversity officer, include more women on faculty search committees, create a mechanism for identifying and correcting pay inequities, and make diversity goals a part of administrators’ performance reviews. Dean Robert Alpern wrote in an e-mail to the medical school community that the school has begun to implement several of the recommendations.

Harlem mixologist Karl Franz Williams ’97 will take over, promising “a new world vibe to the food and beverage presentation.” The art-moderne façade will be preserved, but the former owner is keeping the iconic sign as a souvenir.

The School of Medicine will partner with the University of Puerto Rico in a pilot program that will allow UPR medical students to come to Yale for the PhD portion of a combined MD-PhD degree.
