Remembered

Professor Andrew Hill, who chaired the anthropology department from 2000 to 2006 and headed the Peabody Museum’s anthropology division, died of cancer on September 12. He was 69. Hill, the J. Clayton Stephenson Professor of Anthropology, studied the fossil record of early primates. He was a native of England, and he earned his PhD from the University of London. He joined the Yale faculty in 1985. A popular teacher, he won the Yale College Lex Hixon Prize for Teaching Excellence in the Social Sciences in 1994.

Edwin Cadman, a physician who was chair of the internal medicine department at the School of Medicine from 1985 to 1994, died on September 23 of primary progressive aphasia, a neurogenerative disease. He was 70 years old. Cadman also served as chief of staff and senior vice president for medical affairs at Yale–New Haven Health System from 1994 to 1999. After that, he was dean of the medical school at the University of Hawaii from 1999 to 2005. He retired in 2009.

Appointed

Robert Blocker (pictured) has been appointed to another five-year term as dean of the School of Music. Blocker, 69, has been dean since 1995, except for a brief stint as provost and vice president of Southern Methodist University in 2005–06. During the 20 years since he came to Yale, the school has become tuition-free thanks to a $100 million donation, and the school’s buildings have all undergone renovation.

Stepping down

Peter Crane, the Carl W. Knobloch Jr. Dean of the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, will leave that post in June 2016 after seven years as dean. Crane, 61, a noted plant biologist, will become the first president of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, a former Mellon family estate in Virginia with extensive gardens and a library of landscape history and plant science. His successor at Yale has not yet been chosen.
