Sterling Professor Emeritus of Economics Herbert Scarf (left) died at his home in Sag Harbor, New York, on November 15. He was 85. Scarf earned his PhD in mathematics at Princeton before turning his academic interest to economics, first at the Rand Corporation and Stanford, then, from 1963, at Yale. Scarf developed a number of influential economic ideas, most notably “Scarf’s algorithm,” a tool for measuring the impact of government policy on markets.

Rhodes and Marshall winners: Mason Ji ’16, Jared Milfred ’16, and Isaac Stanley-Becker ’16 will study at Oxford next fall as US Rhodes Scholars, as will tim rudner ’16 as a German Rhodes Scholar. skyler ross ’16 will study at London’s Royal Central School of Speech and Drama as a Marshall Scholar.

Appointed

Peter Oundjian has been named principal conductor of the Yale Philharmonia, the orchestra of the Yale School of Music. Oundjian, who has been a visiting professor at the school since 1981, played first violin in the Tokyo String Quartet. Besides his work at Yale, he will continue to serve as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Yale police chief Ronnell Higgins is the new director of public safety for the university. Higgins will retain the title of chief of police; his expanded portfolio will include campus security operations and security systems. Higgins has been chief since 2011.

Camille Lizarríbar has been named dean of student affairs for Yale College. Lizarríbar, who teaches in Directed Studies and the humanities program, has been dean of Ezra Stiles College since 2010. She succeeds Marichal Gentry.
