Stephanie Wiles, director of the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell, has been named Henry J. Heinz II Director of the Yale University Art Gallery. Wiles, an art historian specializing in Old Master drawings, worked previously at the Morgan Library and Museum and at Wesleyan and Oberlin. At Yale, she will succeed Jock Reynolds, who has been director since 1998.

Mathematician Jeff Brock ’92 has been appointed Yale’s first dean of science for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Brock, who currently directs the Data Science Initiative at Brown, earned his PhD at UC–Berkeley. He will oversee planning for Yale’s science departments.

Remembered

William Beinecke ’36, who led the effort to establish the School of Management, died on April 8. He was 103 years old. Beinecke served on Yale’s Board of Trustees from 1971 to 1982 and made substantial gifts to support SOM, financial aid at the Law School, professorships, and the golf course. He received an honorary doctorate in 1986 and the Yale Medal in 2000.

Edward Lindblom, Sterling Professor Emeritus of Economics and Political Science, died on January 30. He was 100 years old. Lindblom, who introduced the theory of incrementalism to describe how policy change is made, taught at Yale from 1949 to 1987. He helped found Yale’s Institution for Social and Policy Studies and was its director from 1974 to 1980.

Professor of Astronomy Sarbani Basu has been awarded the George Ellery Hale Prize by the American Astronomical Society. The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of solar astronomy. Basu, who is currently chair of the astronomy department, studies solar oscillations to learn about the interior of the sun.
