Light & VerityCampus clipsMark OstowView full imageSexual misconduct complaints at the university rose 51 percent in the second half of 2017, according to the semiannual report from the provost’s office. There were a total of 124 complaints, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, stalking, and intimate partner violence. In the report’s introduction, deputy provost and Title IX coordinator Stephanie Spangler suggested that the sharp increase could be the result of “heightened national attention to the issue of sexual misconduct” that has “encouraged individuals to come forward to share their own experiences at Yale.”
Former secretary of state and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton ’73JD (above) has been chosen by a student committee to address graduating Yale College seniors at this year’s Class Day exercises on May 20. This will be Clinton’s second Class Day appearance; she spoke to the Class of 2001 in her first year as a US senator.
The digital humanities lab will soon take over what was once the periodicals reading room of Sterling Memorial Library. The Franke Family Reading Room, on Sterling’s ground floor, will be fitted out with work space and high-powered computers for applying digital tools to the study of the humanities.
A jury found a former Yale undergraduate not guilty of rape in a March trial in New Haven. The former student was accused of raping a fellow student while she was intoxicated after the campus Halloween concert in 2015. Yale suspended the accused student shortly after the incident; after the trial, his lawyer called on the university to reinstate him.
A game of musical chairs is in the works for some Yale administrators as Commons and Memorial Hall are renovated for the new Schwarzman Center. Nearby Woodbridge Hall, which houses the president’s and secretary’s offices, will have to be vacated during construction. Those offices are moving to the first floor of SSS. In turn, the Yale College dean’s office and three other units will be shifted from SSS to other places on campus.
