Of the 25 people singled out for MacArthur Fellowships this year by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, 5 have degrees from Yale. The so-called genius grant, awarded for “exceptional creativity” and “promise for important future advances,” includes a $625,000 stipend paid over five years. The Yale winners are (clockwise from top left): Gregg Gonsalves ’11, ’17PhD, an epidemiologist, global health advocate, and assistant professor at the School of Public Health; Vijay Gupta ’07MusM, a violinist and social justice advocate in Los Angeles; Titus Kaphar ’06MFA, a painter and founder of NXTHVN art space in New Haven; Okwui Okpokwasili ’96, a dancer and choreographer in New York; and Becca Heller ’10JD, a human rights lawyer with the International Refugee Assistance Project in New York.
