Epidemiologist Saad B. Omer will come to Yale in July as the inaugural director of the Yale Institute for Global Health. Omer, currently a professor at Emory University, has researched the efficacy of vaccines and immunizations in studies around the world. The Institute for Global Health is an interdisciplinary hub drawing on research in the Schools of Nursing, Public Health, and Medicine, as well as other parts of the university.

 

Honored

Eight writers will be honored at Yale in September as winners of the Windham-Campbell Prize, administered by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Winners in nonfiction are Raghu Karnad (India) and Rebecca Solnit (US); in poetry, Ishion Hutchinson (Jamaica) and Kwame Dawes (US); in drama, Young Jean Lee (US) and Patricia Cornelius (Australia); in fiction, Danielle McLaughlin (Ireland) and David Chariandy (Canada). Each winner receives $165,000.

Two Yalies will study at the University of Cambridge as Gates Cambridge Scholars in the fall. Fernando Rojas ’19, who will graduate this spring with a joint BA/MA in history, will pursue a master’s degree in Latin American Studies. Dhruv Nandamudi ’18, who majored in psychology at Yale, aims for a PhD in biology.

 

Remembered

Stanley Insler ’63PhD, the Edward E. Salisbury Professor Emeritus of Sanskrit and Comparative Philology, died on January 5 in New Haven. He was 82 years old. Insler, an authority on the ancient languages and literature of India and Iran, retired in 2012 after 49 years at Yale. He chaired the linguistics department from 1978 to 1989. Among his projects was an English translation of the Gathas, a sacred text of the Zoroastrian religion.

Sterling Professor Emeritus of Psychology Edward Zigler died on February 7 at his home in North Haven, Connecticut, He was 88 years old. Zigler, a developmental psychologist, was best known as an architect of the federal Head Start program for preschool children. He came to Yale in 1959. Zigler directed Yale’s Bush Center in Child Development and Social Policy, which was renamed the Edward Zigler Center in 2005.
