Putting names with the faces

Our September/October articles on coeducation were illustrated with a number of photographs from Yale’s archives of that first year, most of which came to us without any kind of identification of the students. Since the issue was published, many alums have written to identify themselves or others in the photos. We’re delighted to provide an update here.

Alan Frishman ’68 answered an important question: who was the woman on the cover? “The unidentified female student on the cover of your September/October issue was Gail Anderson Frishman, my wife,” writes Frishman. “Gail died on August 20, 1979. Gail was a freshman at NYU during my senior year. We got married right after I graduated and, while I was in grad school, Gail worked in the Yale Information Office. She then transferred as a sophomore in 1969 (hence the picture). Although we lived off campus, Gail was affiliated with Ezra Stiles College and was a history major and Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year. She graduated from Yale College in 1972. Thank you for putting Gail on the cover. It brought back a lot of memories.”

Carol Coe Fowler ’73 recognized herself in the photo of members of her class walking to Freshman Assembly in September 1969. “I am the one in the lace dress with straight shoulder length hair,” she writes. “That’s probably one of the last times I wore a dress or straightened my hair while at Yale.”

The male undergrad carrying bags during 1968’s Coeducation Week? According to Stuart Groskin ’71, ’75MD, that’s Groskin’s former roommate Peter Kenyon ’71, “a cheerleader and an all-around terrific guy.”

The group of students from the Class of ’71 who were pictured in the Davenport College courtyard didn’t just identify themselves. They recreated the photo when they came back to campus for the 50th anniversary event in September. From left to right in both pictures are Barbara Twigg, Mary Schuette, Linda Smith-Shearer, and Karen Lawrence.
