A new mayor with Yale ties

Six years ago, two Yale graduates faced off in a mayoral election to succeed longtime mayor John DeStefano Jr. In that race, state senator Toni Harp ’78MEnvD, a graduate of the School of Architecture, defeated alder Justin Elicker ’10MEM, ’10MBA, whose degrees are from the environment and management schools, in both the Democratic primary and the general election. In a rematch this year, the results went the other way: Elicker defeated Harp in the primary, then repeated the result in November, when Harp ran on the Working Families party ticket. As a candidate, Elicker called for Yale to increase its annual voluntary contribution to the city, from the current $11.5 million to $50 million. Also elected in November: sophomore Eli Sabin ’22, who will be the new alder for Ward 1, a constituency dominated by Yale students.
