The university raised $826.8 million in new fund-raising commitments in the 2018–19 fiscal year, President Peter Salovey ’86PhD announced in the fall. That’s the most Yale has raised in a single year except for the $861.9 million in 2010–11, the final year of a capital campaign. The 2018–19 figure includes $662.8 million in cash gifts, a new single-year record. The Yale Alumni Fund also set a single-year record, with $42.9 million in annual giving. More than 46,000 people and entities made gifts to the university.

A $100 million gift from the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation will fund the creation of a new center at the School of Management to help train leaders for America’s public schools. The Broad Center at Yale SOM will offer a one-year, tuition-free master’s degree program in education management for early-career leaders and advanced executive training for leaders in public-school districts. The gift is the largest in SOM’s history.

The National Labor Relations Board has proposed a new rule under which graduate-student teaching assistants and researchers would no longer be considered employees, reversing a 2016 ruling that permitted TAs to organize unions. TAs seeking to organize at Yale withdrew their petition in 2018 after an NLRB ruling in a different case that undercut their election strategy. The university has long opposed a union for teaching assistants, arguing that graduate students are well supported by Yale and are not primarily employees. The NLRB is accepting public comments on the proposed rule until January 15.

Students from the School of Architecture built a three-family house (left) in New Haven’s Hill neighborhood in 2019. It was the third year of the school’s collaboration with Columbus House, a nonprofit that provides services for people coping with homelessness. For 52 years, first-year students have designed and built a project as part of what is now called the Jim Vlock First-Year Building Project. Since 1989, houses have been the subject of the program, and students have built housing for more than 50 New Haven families.
