Never trust a photographer when he says, “Let’s take a goofy one . . . just for fun.” The students making faces here are holding pumpkins they had just finished
carving last October in Pauli Murray College. For the past several years, right before Halloween, Yale has provided each residential college with a supply of pumpkins on which students can unleash their creativity.

Heather McClure ’20 (back row, center), as senior chair of the Student Activities Committee, helped organize Murray’s carving night. She still remembers it fondly. “I was able to carve a pumpkin with my roommate from my freshman year,” she says. “Since we lost half of our senior spring, it was a meaningful memory for us.” Here’s hoping students this fall will get to practice their own carving skills. At a safe distance.
