For a certain subspecies of Yale man, some balance has been restored to the world—or at least to the corner of York and Elm Streets—by the return of clothier J. Press to the neighborhood where it has dressed Elis for most of the last 120 years. The store had to vacate its York Street flagship in 2013 because of damage from Winter Storm Nemo, and it had been in temporary quarters on Chapel Street and College Street since then. In June, J. Press bought a building on Elm Street around the corner from their original home. They now inhabit the space once occupied by TYCO Printing and the Yankee Doodle. Chief merchandising officer Robert Squillaro says the store is designed to attract window shoppers with sportswear and collegiate items on the first floor; suits and sportscoats are upstairs for a “more private experience,” he says.
