Salsa and electronics

Live music, from the studios of WYBC.com.

Pictured here is the Yale salsa band, La Orquesta Tertulia, performing live last May in the WYBC studio at 21 Broadway. The performance was seen and heard on WYBC.com (aka WYBCx), a website run by students. But it wasn’t heard, let alone seen, on the New Haven nonprofit radio station WYBC-FM.

Originally, WYBC radio was managed by students. Now, both the students at WYBCx and the professionals at WYBC-FM are overseen by a board of governors, mostly Yale alumni. Funding for the student-run site comes from the radio station.
“There is a trade-off,” says WYBCx general manager Meg Buzbee ’24, cohost of a weekly show called Night Drive: “Students have to seek it out.” But, she adds, “we offer broadcast training to anyone interested”—and anyone in New Haven can join. Get your mic ready.
