The Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop closed in 2008 after 58 years as a beloved Yale hangout. But its signature Doodleburger recently made a reappearance at a New York burger joint. Every month, Hamburger America on MacDougal Street features a favorite burger from around the country, and in September, owner and hamburger historian George Motz revived the Doodleburger. (At left, server Allison Jacobs displays a couple of specimens.)

Doodle superfan Richard Nash Gould ’68, ’72MArch, who joined Motz at the grill on September 5 for the official launch, explains how to make a Doodleburger: “Put the patty on the grill, sprinkle chopped onions on the top, turn it over so onions are on the bottom, then white American cheese and a sliced tomato on that.”

Motz’s version was a little bigger than its namesake, but Gould is okay with that. “When you eat it, you get this—this memory comes back to you,” he says. “One guy, a Yale alum with his fiancée, was practically crying.”
