By the numbers: Yale's revenue

With cuts to federal funding of universities in the news this spring—along with a potential increase in the tax on endowment income—we thought a refresher on where Yale’s money comes from would be in order. The charts here show the university’s sources of revenue in the 2024–25 fiscal year and, for comparison, in 1949–50, before federal grants and medical services became significant sources of revenue. The revenue in the 2024–25 budget totaled $6.03 billion; in 1949–50 it was $14.7 million (or about $197 million in today’s dollars).  “Other” includes royalties, sales of goods and services, rental income from non-students, income from special events, and, in 1949–50, medical services. “Gifts” covers only gifts made for operating use, not gifts to the endowment.
