Light & VerityTrailheadThe Farmington Canal Trail has a new gateway. In May, the last quarter mile of the Farmington Canal Greenway in New Haven was officially opened to cyclists and pedestrians. Built on the site of a former canal-turned-railroad, the trail will extend 84 miles north all the way to Northampton, Massachusetts (with a gap still to be filled in Southington and Plainville, Connecticut). The final local portion—which extends from the edge of the Yale campus at Temple Street to the corner of Orange and Grove—had to connect to the Audubon Arts District and incorporate a long tunnel under the block between Temple and Whitney. The tunnel (above) is enlivened with displays detailing the history of the canal line. Architect Dean Sakamoto ’98MEnvD worked on the design, which was completed by SLR Consulting. |
