Appointed
John F. Healy is the new chief of the Yale Police Department as of August 1. Healy, a 19-year veteran of the New Haven Police Department, joined the Yale Police in 2023 as captain. He became acting chief in January upon the departure of Anthony Campbell ’95, ’09MDiv, to become chief of Harvard’s police department. Healy got his bachelor’s degree from Marist College and a master of public administration from the University of New Haven.
Vicky Chun has been appointed to a new five-year term as the Thomas A. Beckett Director of Athletics. Chun has served in the role since 2018. In announcing her reappointment, President Maurie McInnis ’96PhD wrote that her decision was “the result of an extensive review process that has spanned the past several months.” McInnis noted Yale’s athletic successes and improvements to facilities among the accomplishments of Chun’s tenure.
Benjamin Johnson has been named the Cary Leeds Head Coach of Men’s Tennis. Johnson comes to Yale from Southern Methodist University, where he spent nine years as an assistant and then associate head coach. Before that, he was head coach at the University of Richmond from 2010 to 2017.
Honored
The Yale Alumni Association will award its highest honor, the Yale Medal, to five alumni this fall. This year’s medalists are Fredric K. Cantor ’58, ’62MD, a volunteer for the Association of Yale Alumni in Medicine and other groups; Marla Grossman ’90, a former chair of the Yale Alumni Fund board; Anthony M. Lavely ’64, a leader in his class organization; Rachel J. Littman ’91, chair of the Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance; and Wendy Maldonado ’93, a leader in the Class of 1993.
Retiring
Stephanie Wiles will retire from her post as Henry J. Heinz II Director of the Yale University Art Gallery in spring 2027. Wiles has led the gallery since 2018, expanding its holdings, adding online resources, and raising more than $100 million in gifts and artwork during the university’s capital campaign. She also led the gallery through the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic. The provost’s office will lead the search for Wiles’s successor.

Joseph LaPalombara, the Arnold Wolfers Professor of Political Science and Management Emeritus, died on June 12 in Hamden, Connecticut. He was 101 years old. LaPalombara was a pioneer in the field of comparative politics and a leading scholar of modern Italian politics. Born in Chicago to Italian immigrant parents, he dropped out of high school before finding his way to the University of Illinois, then to Princeton for a PhD. He came to Yale in 1964. During his tenure, he directed the Institution for Social and Policy Studies and twice chaired the political science department. He retired in 2001, but he taught an advanced seminar each year into his nineties.
Kenneth B. Wiberg, who served on the Yale chemistry faculty from 1962 to 1998, died on May 10 in Needham, Massachusetts. He was 98. Wiberg, the Eugene Higgins Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, was a leading figure in the field of physical-organic chemistry. He chaired the department at Yale from 1968 to 1971. A native of Brooklyn, he studied at MIT and earned his PhD from Columbia.
