Fast track to fossilhood

A pair of unlucky toads, immortalized at the Peabody.

When you think of a fossil, you think old. Like millions of years old. But in the Yale Peabody Museum’s new exhibition About Time, some 340-million-year-old fossilized sea lilies are juxtaposed with these toad fossils (above) that are younger than a kindergartner. In 2023, the toads had been caught as brine flooded into a California lakebed. As evaporation led to very salty conditions, the toads’ skin and body parts were replaced with a mineral called trona. The exhibition, a meditation on the nature of time in the natural world, includes contributions from all ten of the museum’s divisions. It is on display through August 9, 2027.
