Rallying the first-years

An event in Yale's opening days to turn new arrivals into sports fans.

About two thirds of Yale College first-years cheered their way through “Yale Up!”—an event in the John J. Lee Amphitheater introducing them to all things sports at Yale—on August 30, two days before classes began. The Yale Precision Marching Band played, the cheerleaders cheered, resources were explained, and members of the baseball team volunteered to make it all run smoothly. At the end of the program, a representative of each residential college joined in a game of tug-of-war (pictured), seven colleges on each side. “I forget every year,” says deputy athletic director Jay Judge, “that I should be bringing earplugs.”
