Warner served as a radio operator with the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1946, earned his B.A. M.A. and Ph.D degrees from Yale, and became an enthusiastic traveler on five continents. The James T. Shotwell Professor of International Relations Emeritus at Columbia University, he was director of the university's institute of War and Peace Studies from 1976 to 1986. For more than fifty years he guided several generations of students through the intricacies of American foreign policy, the causes of war, nuclear strategy, and the influence of technology on war and international relations.
