In Remembrance: Otomar Jan Bartos ’58PhD Died on December 16 2013

Otomar Jan Bartos died at his home in Boulder, Colorado, on December 16, 2013. He was 86. He grew up in former Czechoslovakia, playing soccer and guitar and acting in movies. He attended Law School at Prague University until drawing attention as an anti-communist demonstrator in post WWII Eastern Europe. To avoid persecution and imprisonment, he ascaped across the "Iron Curtain" to Austria in 1950. After two years working as a forest ranger in Canada and attending the University of Toronto, Otomar immigrated to the United States, becoming a naturalized citizen in the late 1950s. He earned his PhD in sociology at Yale University, before teaching at the University of Hawaii, Whittier College, Northwestern University, University of Pittsburgh and Dartmouth College, eventually settling down as a tenured professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
