In Remembrance: Stanley S. Brotman ’47 Died on February 21 2014

Stanley S. Brotman, a longtime United States district judge and member of the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, died on February 21, 2014. He was 89. Brotman, who obtained his undergraduate degree from Yale and law degree from Harvard, enlisted in the Army when the United States entered the Second World War. Placed in the Specialized Training Program for the Office of Strategic Services, Brotman was stationed in Burma and studied the Burmese language during the war.

After retiring from the Army in 1952, Brotman opened a law office in Vineland, New Jersey. In 1975, he was appointed by President Gerald Ford to be federal judge for the District of New Jersey. He also periodically sat on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. In 1979, Brotman began serving in the Virgin Islands, and in 1997, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist appointed Brotman to a seven-year term on the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
