After graduating from Yale University in 1947, Murcelle was an educator in Virginia's Orange County public schools for 35 years. She served 12 years on the Orange County School Board. For her dedication to education, she was presented with the first Lifetime Achievement Award by the Orange County Education Foundation in 2012.
