He was 81. A musician, he helped pay for his studies at Yale with money he earned playing jazz clubs as a teenager. At Yale he was one of the founders of the Yale Russian Chorus. I am saddened, even ashamed, that I waited too long to reach out to Don Goodman. He was my supervisor when I taught in two of his John Jay programs, a Police-Humanist project in the south Bronx and a sports and American culture class at Riker's Island prison. We shared a love of music esp. jazz.
I was a very amateur pianist - playing only at home - but I have a vivid memory of the far more accomplished Don and myself playing together on my piano after I sent in the manuscript for my first book, a labor history of baseball THE IMPERFECT DIAMOND. I am so sorry we lost touch in the last decades of his life.
I was finally moved to try to find Don again by re-reading some of the collected Dick Cavett New York Times' pieces in the book TALK SHOW. Will never forget Don's memory of his classmate Dick Cavett rushing back to Yale in the wee hours one morning and gushing about Julie Andrews after seeing "My Fair Lady" on Broadway.
To Don's family, he remains forever etched in my memory as a warm and intelligent man.
