In Remembrance: Charles George Aschmann Jr. ’41 Died on January 17 2013

Charles G. Aschmann Jr. passed away on January 17, 2013, at home in Alexandria, Virginia.  He was 93.

Mr. Aschmann enlisted in the army during World War II, serving in the combat engineers on Okinawa and then in the occupation forces of Japan. After the war he worked for Textron and other businesses. He eventually took a job with the US Navy as an industrial engineer and earned his professional engineer's certification. He started out in Norfolk where he helped design the incentive system adopted by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.  While in Norfolk, Mr. Aschmann read law and passed the Virginia Bar exam, eventually being licensed to practice in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, DC, and before the US Supreme Court. He continued to work for the Navy, moving from engineering to legal work. After retiring from the government, he opened a private law practice with his youngest son, Frank, specializing in employment law.  He finally retired from law at the age of 87, having achieved 50 years of service in the Virginia bar. 

Mr. Aschmann married Mary Jane Cariker in 1946 and they were together for 67 years. They had three children while they lived in the Norfolk area, then moved in 1960 to Alexandria, Virginia, in the Washington, DC, suburbs, where they remained for the rest of their lives. 

Mary Jane passed away on February 5, 2013, just 20 days after Charles died. They are survived by their three children (Althea of Blacksburg, Virginia; Charles of Fort Valley, Virginia; and Frank of Alexandria, Virginia) and four grandchildren.
